Training vets in Ethiopia: Part 6

By Josep Subirana (Veterinary Training Advisor)
06 Apr 2011

Josep, the driver and the Animal Health AssistantI wake up at 6am to chanting coming from either the Coptic church or the nearby mosque, it’s hard to tell. I have an early breakfast and stare out over the town that is just awakening. The noise of people, donkeys, horses, cows, sheep, bicycles, a dog and a car all beginning their days combines to sound like a thousand bees dancing.

Today a man walks about with a megaphone and a battery on his shoulder saying something about water and payment.

Breakfast, as always comes, with more ever surprising cultural information:

  • Muslims can be recognized by their short trousers
  • Shiferaw is a plant used to prevent breast feeding problems
  • Phones were considered evil for a long time

One of the trainees pulls a stalk of a plant and applies it juice to the facial wart of another trainee.

Another day of training starts. Spirits are very high. We are a very motivated team.
